Arcade is a relatively new theme on Doodle Jump. It features 8-bit graphics, and even overhauled sound effects (which no other theme includes.)

Gameplay[]

Despite the changes in graphics and sounds, much of the gameplay remains the same, with new unique monsters, obstacles and powerups.

Arcade is one of the few themes where neither the propeller hat or jetpack, nor any forms of them appear, just springs and trampolines. The Rocket appears more often in this theme than any other, and has around 7 unique looks (none varying in effects.) The new Spring Suit also appears exclusively in Arcade. It functions the same as Classic's Spring Shoes, besides granting the player with a triple-bullet multi-shot. Like the Shoes, the Suit expires after 5 jumps. The Cherry is a powerup that spawns on platforms in certain obstacle sets. When collected, monsters will, for a short time, become White Ghosts, that can be "tagged", or simply destroyed upon contact. The Cherry is a reference to Namco's Pac-Man, going as far as to include its own sound effects.

Many of Classic's monsters (namely; Small Winged Blue, Round Red, Purple "Spider" One-eyed Blue, Oval Green, "The Terrifier") make their appearance in the Arcade theme, and all function just as they do in classic (read more in Monsters). Arcade introduces a range of new monsters, many being nods to games and franchises of the arcade Golden Age.

Obstacles[]

  • Spider: Two monsters are classified as Spiders in the Achievements Log and in Missions. The more common appears like a UFO and moves horizontally (side to side) on the screen, sometimes as if targeting the player. They can shoot a wave of bullets/lasers that end the and game upon contact. The other actually does appear as a spider, shooting webs down to the player with much slower horizontal movements. There is only one obstacle in the game this Spider form spawns in. Both can be defeated with one shot.
  • Dive Bomber: Dive Bomber is a small blue and green monster that spawns in the middle of the screen. When approached, it, as the name suggests, quickly dives down in the player's direction. It can be defeated with a single shot.
  • Chomper: A round orange monster that moves horizontally across the screen, opening and shutting its mouth. They can be defeated with a single shot.
  • Invaders: Two rows of enemies that increase in size the later in the game they spawn. Invaders always spawn in these block formations. They clearly stand as a reference to classic arcade game Space Invaders. Individual Invaders will randomly shoot a single laser, and each can be defeated with one shot.
A purple and pink Invader-like enemy occasionally spawns. It shoots more frequently and quickly moves from side to side on the screen. It can be defeated with one shot as well.
  • Space Ape: Space Ape is one of the game's few true mini-boss characters. It jumps up the platforms ahead of you and tosses down Space Barrels when idle. It's a very apparent reference to Nintendo's Donkey Kong. Space Ape is defeated in ten shots.
  • Blue Bug/Miscellaneous: The "Blue Bug" and Miscellaneous monsters function as regular Classic monsters. Miscellaneous only appear around the Cherry powerup. All can be defeated with one shot each.
